Kawakawa Healing Balm

Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) is known as the “Pharmacy of the Forest”. The small tree, with distinctive heart shaped leaves, is a significant and sacred plant to Maori. Among its many healing properties, it is reputed to soothe insect bites and stings, skin rashes, poor circulation, bruises, wounds, burns, aches and pains.

Contents: Maceration of Kawakawa leaves in Extra Virgin Olive oil (Olea europaea) and Beeswax.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser lived in Waikare Inlet, east of Kawakawa from 1975 until his death in 2000. In 1998 the Kawakawa toilets were upgraded as a community project, with Hundertwasser involved in not only the design, but much of the construction. Common themes in his work include bright colours and organic shapes embracing curves, spirals, and textured surfaces. He strove to create works in harmony with nature and was a passionate environmentalist. Hundertwasser also designed “The Grass Hut” which is as full of colour and interest inside, as it is on the outside.

We've developed this new range of tins with a strong Kiwi theme, inspired by the old 'Retro' tourism posters. We've used our own original photographs and all the design work was done by our son, Giles. We've also selected iconic Kiwi sayings as the names for the tins, which are a bit of fun, and also reflect the product within.

They are a departure from our usual minimal labeling. We think they make ideal gifts - perfect for nostalgic Kiwi's overseas, travelers and visitors to NZ, and of course for your own use.

The tins are lightweight, sturdy, and fit together happily into a pack or bag to take away with you. Each tin is affixed to a postcard with removable tape, so you have the tin and the complete image on the card.
